Ways to use THERAPEUTIC-GRADE (chemical-free) essential oils.

Direct Inhalation

Direct inhalation of the oils is easy and brings many of the same benefits as distillation.  Put several drops into the palms of your hands, cup over your nose and mouth, and breathe deeply.  You may also apply oils to a handkerchief or tissue and inhale.  ►See Aromatherapy.

Use in Humidifier/Vaporizer

Some essential oils, like peppermint, lemon, or frankincense, make ideal additions to humidifiers or vaporizers.  Begin by adding honey, sea salt, or bath salt to the water to emulsify the oils.  Next add one to two drops of essential oil directly to the water, increasing the amount as needed.

Note: Because essential oils can damage machine parts, be careful not to apply the oils directly on any part of the machine or plastic covering.

Bath or Shower

Add two to three drops of an essential oil to our special Bath Gel Base TM for an even dispersion and to prevent stronger oils from stinging sensitive areas.  Our essential-oil-enhanced shampoos, conditioners, and bath and shower gels provide all-natural cleansing and moisturizing for hair and skin.  For maximum penetration, leave them on the skin or scalp for several minutes.

Direct Application

Therapeutic-Grade essential oils give healing benefits when applied directly to the skin.  Because they are soluble with the lipid membranes of cell walls, therapeutic-grade essential oils have an unmatched ability to penetrate cells and disperse within minutes throughout the body when applied topically.

The longer essential oils stay in contact with the skin, the more likely they are to be absorbed.  Rose Ointment TM, a mixture of beeswax, vitamin E, and other natural ingredients, is designed to be layered on top of essential oils to reduce their evaporation and enhance penetration.  It also helps seal and protect cuts and wounds.

In direct application, follow these tow tips for safety:

  • Always skin test an essential oil before using it.  Each person's body is different, so apply oils to a small area first.

  • Apply on oil or blend at a time.  When layering oils that are new to you, allow enough time (15 to 30 minutes) for the body to respond before applying a second oil.

Caution

Exercise caution when applying essential oils to skin that has been exposed to cosmetics,  personal care products, soaps, and cleansers containing synthetic chemicals.  Some of these products--especially ones with petroleum-based chemicals--may penetrate and remain in the skin and fatty tissues for days or even weeks.  Essential oils may react with such chemicals and cause skin irritation, nausea, headaches, or other uncomfortable effects.

Mixing Oils

You may mix or layer a single oil with a blend or mix a single oil with another single oil.  However, mixing oil blends together may alter the benefits as well as the aroma.

Wearing as a Perfume or Cologne

As a healthy alternative to synthetic fragrances, therapeutic-grade essential oils are all-natural and have long-lasting, distinctive aromas.  More and more people are wearing essential oils and enjoying the benefits oil can provide.

Creating a Compress

A compress is ideal for soothing tired muscles or reducing inflammation.  Begin by rubbing one to three drops on desired location--diluted or neat--depending on the oil and the skin sensitivity at that location.  Cover with a damp towel.  (The damp towel should be hot if you are helping to soothe muscles.  To reduce inflammation, use a cold, damp towel.)  Next cover the moist towel with a dry towel and leave in place for 10 to minutes.

As the oil penetrates, you may experience a warming or even a burning sensation, especially in areas where the greatest benefits occur.  If burning becomes uncomfortable, apply V-6 Mixing OilTM or any pure vegetable oil.

Rectal Implant and Retention Enema

Enemas and rectal implants are the most efficient ways to deliver essential oils to the urinary tract and reproductive organs.  Always use a sterile applicator of your choice.  For best results mix and use before retiring.  Mix up 20 to 35 drops of therapeutic-grade essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil.  Place mixture in a small syringe and inject into the rectum.  Clean and disinfect applicator after each use.

Vaginal Retention Implant

For systemic health problems, such as candida or vaginitis a vaginal implant is one of the most effective ways for the body to absorb essential oils.  Place 10 to 20 drops of therapeutic-grade essential oil into a tablespoon of carrier oil.  While lying down use a small syringe to implant the mixture into the vagina before retiring.  Try not to get up again until morning.  Using a capsule, place oils in the capsule and implant immediately after the oils are added.  A pad or tampon may be necessary in the retention of the essential oil solution.

Massage

To create your own custom massage oil, mix three to four drops of essential oil with 1/2 teaspoon of a massage oil base, such as V-6 Mixing OilTM.  You may also use our premixed massage oils, such as Ortho EaseTM, Ortho SportTM, or SensationTM, for a soothing massage.

Raindrop TechniqueTM

Raindrop Technique is a kit of powerful essential oils designed specifically for topical application during massage.  Raindrop Technique was developed as a result of research on spinal misalignments.

Vita Flex Technique

Vita Flex means vitality through the reflexes.  It is said to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago, long before acupuncture was developed.  Oils are applied on the contact points, and energy is released through electrical impulses created by contact between the fingertips and reflex point.  This electrical charge follows the nerve pathways to a break in the electrical circuit caused by toxins, damaged tissues, or loss of oxygen.  the reflex system encompasses the entire body and mind, releasing many kinds of tension, congestion, and imbalances.

The Vita Flex (VF) numbers correspond to locations on the feet and are noted on the foot chart.

Vita Flex Technique

Vita Flex is specialized form of hand and foot massage that is exceptionally effective in delivering the benefits of essential oils throughout the body.  Apply a drop or two of oil to the areas of the feet that correspond to the system of the body you wish to support.

Dietary Supplements

Oils that are generally regarded as safe GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe by the FDA) may be taken internally as dietary supplements (see pages 134-135 in the Introduction to Young Living Essential Oils  Code #3875 $2.00).  Essential oils should always be diluted before being used as a dietary supplement.  You may dilute on drop of essential oil in any oil-soluble liquid, such as a teaspoon of honey or 4 ounces of soy milk or rice milk.

Cooking

Many essential oils make excellent food flavorings—they are much more potent than dried herbs.  You may want to experiment in your recipe, but some have found that dipping a toothpick in a bottle of oil and then stirring it in the recipe provides sufficient flavoring.  To maximize the benefits of the oils, add them after cooking to avoid undue heat.

See the Cooking with Essential Oils.

Practical Uses

Travel Diffuser

Essential oils can purify the air in your vehicle by placing a few drops of Purification on a cotton ball then placing it in the air vent.  Store the cotton ball in a zip-lock baggy and re-use.  Peace & Calming is another good oil to use on your way home from work; helping to unwind from a hectic day or as desired.  Tip: Only try this method using oils that can be safely inhaled directly.

In a hotel room; place a few drops of essential oils on a wash cloth then place on the air vent of the air conditioner.

Water Filters

Essential oils can added to the post-filter side of water purifiers to help purify the water. Use peppermint, lemon, clove, or cinnamon.

Painting

Adding essential oils to paint will counteract the unpleasant smell. And because essential oils are not fatty oils, they will leave no oil spots on the walls. Add a 5 ml. bottle of your favorite essential oil, such as White Angelica, Abundance, or Sacred Mountain, to 1 gallon of paint. Mix well.

LAUNDRY

Dust Mites

As we all know, dust mites live in your bedding, feeding from the dead skin cells you constantly shed.  Adding 25 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to each wash load, or approximately 1/2 ounce to a bottle of your favorite liquid laundry detergent.

Rinse Cycle

Adding essential oils of fir, spruce, juniper, lavender, cedarwood, rosewood, or wintergreen are  beneficial in the rinse cycle.

Stain Remover

Use a drop or two of Lemon oil on a stain. Let it sit a few minutes and rub off with a clean cloth or throw into laundry cycle.

In the Dryer

Instead of using toxic and irritating softening sheets in the dryer, toss in a dampened washcloth with 10 drops of lavender, lemon, melaleuca, bergamot, or other oils added. While the oils will not  reduce static cling, they will impart a lovely fragrance to the clothes.

SAFE GUIDELINES

Always keep a bottle of V-6 Mixing Oil, Massage Oil Base, or any pure vegetable oil handy when using essential oils topically.  Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if he cause discomfort or skin irritation.

Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from light.  If stored properly, essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.

Keep essential oils out of reach of children.  Treat them as you would any product with therapeutic uses.

Do not use essential oils rich in menthol (such as peppermint) on the throat or neck area of children under 30 months of age.

Direct sunlight and essential oils -- lemon, bergamot, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, White Angelica TM, and other citrus oils may cause a rash or darker pigmentation if applied to skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 3 to 4 days of use.

Keep essential oils away from eye area and do not put into ears.  Do not handle contact lenses or rub eyes with essential oils on fingers.  Oils with high phenol content—oragano, helichrysum, cinnamon, thyme, clove, lemongrass, bergamot, Theives, and ImmuPower -- may damage contacts and irritate eyes.

Pregnant women should consult their health care professional before using essential oils containing constituents with hormone-like activity, such as clary sage, sage, Idaho tansy, juniper, and fennel.

Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using essential oils.  Avoid hyssop, fennel, and Idaho tansy oils.

People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on a small area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the arm, before applying the oil on other areas.  the bottom of the feet is one of the safest, most effective places to use essential oils.

Before taking GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe (by the FDA) essential oils internally, always dilute with an oil-soluble liquid like honey, olive oil, or soy milk.

Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bathwater.  Use Bath Gel Base as a dispersing agent for oils in the bath or use Aqua Essence TM Bath Pack.
