 “Ancient Wisdom, Modern Medicine”

Natural Synergy - Research with Essential Oils

 D. Gary Young, N.D. and Nicole Stevens, Research Scientist

We welcome you to Training CD #71 from the 2004 Young Living Convention in Nashville.  Two very exciting and informative lectures: first by Gary Young on Ancient Wisdom and Modern Medicine, followed by Nicole Stevens, research and scientist.  Nicole will discuss her amazing findings on cancer research using essential oils.  And now here is Gary to share this exciting information.

Gary Young, ND - About Frankincense

(This lecture was accompanied by slides taken during D. Gary Young’s trips to those areas specified.) This is the traditional way that Frankincense was used 3,000 years before Christ–and this happens to be a replica of an ancient Frankincense burner that I brought back from Salalah,  Oman.  Frankincense is the oldest story tree in the world,  and the legends and the stories date back 3,000 B.C.  There are legends and stories that say the Frankincense dates back longer than that, and some even say 10,000 B.C., but the only known writings we have found and that have been identified by university specialists have been 3,000 B.C., so we will stay in that time frame.

Balsam More Valuable than Gold

In 3,000 B.C. Frankincense had more value than gold.  There was only one other thing that had more value than Frankincense (which was very interesting) and that, however, wasn’t gold.  For a time period from about 1,000 B.C. to the birth of Christ there was another oil that was regarded to have more value than Frankincense.  (This we just discovered the  past few weeks in our research and studies out of Israel)–and that oil–could you guess what it is–I heard it–Balsam!

This research that came out in Israel a few weeks ago was very interesting because it put another spin on what I have shared with you for quite some time about the stories of Frankincense, Myrrh, and gold, that the reality of it was that it was not a gold nugget that was brought to the Christ Child.  Based on the legends at the Hebrew University, it was the oil–and it was said to be the Frankincense oil which was referred to as “liquid gold.”  The latest research that just came out has been very, very interesting to entertain because Balsam oil was called “gold.”

Gifts to the Christ Child

The people who were doing the research who have found these latest scrolls and translations are saying now it might have been Balsam oil, Frankincense and Myrrh that was brought to the Christ Child.  As I have shared with you, based on writings at the Hebrew University, it was Frankincense oil.  It remains to be really known, I suppose, because there are possibilities.  We do know that Frankincense and Myrrh and Balsam were very commonly used throughout the regions, and Balsam grew on the inland north slopes of southern Arabia north of where the Frankincense trees grew and grow today.

Balsam Trees Almost Extinct

The Balsam trees, unfortunately, are all gone now and the same in another location in Israel where they grew in Anguidae.  Actually a little southwest of Anguidae there’s a wadi that comes down out of the canyon and the Balsam trees grew very abundantly there, and Balsam was distilled in the Judean desert around the time of or prior to the birth of Christ.  In fact, one of the greatest discoveries I have made in my career, I felt, was following the legends of an old treasury house or bank building for six years when I traveled in Israel looking for this legend. I traveled the entire country of Israel from border to border, ocean to Jordan, and finally an old gentle-man shared with us that there were some ruins up under these cliffs that we might want to go explore it–and so we did.  This is what we found. People, (botanists) traveled from Hypha University, took samples from the mortar of the distillery chamber (this is the boiler tank where the water was held) and heated it to produce the steam for the chamber that I am standing in there where the resin was crushed and put with water.

Visualize the Distillation System

The huge wooden lid that set on top of that  was the traditional system, and the steam came through that port right in front of me on the backside.  Right here you can see that’s where the steam came through. Actually right here the lid set on top and the steam came through here and as the steam would come over the top of the water, the hot steam caused the water to agitate and the hotter the water would get, the more it would agitate and there would have been actual channels inside of the bottom of the lid that would have directed the steam across the top of the water.  That was the tradition. As it would agitate, they would start stirring it and then the resin would start floating to the top and the agitation and the oil would start to come out of the resin and they had a separator here at this end right here where it came off into the separator or the collection chamber. When they took the mortar samples out of the distilling chamber here they found resins and residue of Frankincense, of Myrrh and of Balsam. It is believed to be very possible that the oils taken to the Christ Child at Bethlehem were taken from this distillery–and that is pretty exciting!

Do you see the large stone in front of the doorway here? It gives an idea perhaps of what we read about in the Bible with the stone in front of the sepulcher at Christ’s tomb.  I thought I was a pretty good man until I pushed on that rock and tried to roll open the door. I was the only thing that moved!

This was called a “treasury house” or a bank building where they processed and distilled the oils. Because of the value that existed the oils were more highly treasured than gold or silver.  These traditions and customs go back to Oman  in southern Arabia.

Stories and Legends with Truth

I love the stories and I have always had a feeling that legends have truth, and legends (or truths) create legends, because as everybody tells the story they kind of embellish it just a little bit.  You’ve all told a story and put your own spin on it, but this is some-thing I know without question. I’ve never heard a joke passed more than two generations. Generally, by the second generation or the third generation the joke is not funny anymore–and that’s the end of it, so it’s never passed on. Legends are passed on forever, just as I am here today passing on a legend to you that you will go home and share and you will pass on to your grandchildren and it will go on and on because legends are born from truths and truth carry forever.  So when I hear a legend I start pursuing it and following it to the root of the truth, and it has taken me all over the world and to some extra phenomenal. experiences.

Frankincense Areas

This area right here is Salalah–this is the Frankincense area, and further up here is the port of the Queen of Sheba and that’s where the ships would come in and dock and they would come with their linens and their spices and their silks and whatever goods they were bearing.  They brought cedar here and they would trade for the Frankincense and the Myrrh and the Balsam (resins and oil), and just inland about 150 kilometers was the richest and oldest city in the world at that time–the City of Od.

The City of Od reigned for 35 years as the richest trading city in the entire world.  The camel caravans would come over the Silk Road into Southern Arabia and they would come here and trade. They would go across the empty quarter.  Some of the camel caravans would be two and three caravans strong–6,000 camels to a caravan–crossing the empty quarter headed for Petra. It would take them 60 days to make the trip, the journey through the empty quarter to Petra.  They would generally hit the trail right there in Medina and then go up.

This area was also called the Frankincense Trail and a lot of the Frankincense before the war started would come this way, pick up the Myrrh, and travel this way to Medina and then on to Petra.  But the majority of the Frankincense came out of the City of Od until 5,000 B.C. and they crossed this way.  After B.C. (500 A.D.) they came this way, so they could hook in here at Medina and then travel all the way to Petra. This is where they would offload the camels and where they had the storage chambers (the treasure house).  This was a phenomenal building and if you have not seen this building you should all book tickets at least by Monday morning and go visit it!

You can see the little people here–I think they are all from Ireland because they are just little people!  You take the tallest person right here and put that person right here and it gives you an idea how tall those columns are. Then it gives you a bit of an idea how tall that entire building is.

Amazing Workmanship!

That building was carved out of solid stone, as you see right here. When I went here I had one very strong desire and that was I wanted to ride an Arabian stallion through this gorge like Indiana Jones!  But they wouldn’t allow me to do that.  I was disappointed, but I had a measuring tape in my pocket because it was just a custom I have of carrying a measuring tape, and I measured this column right here and I reached up as high as I could (which is a little over 7') and measured the column again, and there wasn’t 1/8 of an inch difference in the size of the column in that distance!

You have to ask yourself, “How could they have been so specific in carving that in all the structure?”  This wasn’t a piece of stone that was put in a mold or it wasn’t laid down on the ground and turned on a lathe.  It was carved in place out of solid rock–the entire structure!

Early Practices with Oils

As you go through the doors in here there were rooms back in the side where they would offload the camels.  They would put the resins in there, the Frankincense in one room, the Myrrh in another room, and the Balsam in another room, and the oils in another room.  Then the merchants would come from Greece and Alexandria and Athens and Damask and would come in here and there was a big wooden table in the center of the room where they would sit with the bank president, the accountant, the Steve Bentleys, and they would negotiate, and hopefully the person doing the bartering did good for his king because that was his job, and if he didn’t do a good job he was put on a replacement program–so most of them did a good job!    Then the camels would reload and make their journeys on to their respective countries.  What we know now is that the resin (if not the oil) went to the distillery in the Jordanian desert west of Anguidae.  We don’t know if the oils that were taken to Christ were distilled there or if they were carried all the way from the City of Od, which is now called the Lost City of Ubar. It was discovered in 1994 and Mary and I were here in 1996.  They started excavation in 1995 and this was all that was excavated at the time we were there.

Lost City of Ubar

It was a very rewarding time and as you look at the little rooms right here below me (this was the pathway to come around here and get into the storage vaults), but these were the storage vaults where they stored the resin and the oil in alabaster containers.  Now, where do you suppose they got the alabaster?  There is not alabaster in Southern Arabia. Well, alabaster was really predominant in what country?  Egypt!  Maybe we could go to the pictures of the alabaster jars that were used in Egypt. The Egyptians would come in with their ships and trade their goods–alabaster and other things–for the resins and the oils and take them back to their respective countries.

3,000 Year-old Oils Still Viable

This was an alabaster container that was found in King Tut’s tomb–and there were many of them–and there was a total of 350 liters of oil in all the alabaster containers combined in his tomb when it was opened in 1922. A lot of the oils in the containers were still very viable and very usable.  And as they took samples into the university and had them assayed through gas chromatograms and mass spectrometry.  They found the constituents in those oils from 3,000 years ago still as active and viable as freshly distilled oil today!

I saw several of these alabaster jars when I was studying at the Cairo University and it was a blessed experience.  About 1" inside of the wall of the alabaster jar the gums and waxes from the oil (because their method of distilling was relatively crude in those days) had solidified against the wall of the alabaster jar, so there was what we call a “wax ring” inside, but inside that wax ring the oils were just a viable as could be today.  People are always asking me, “Well, if I buy these oils, how long will they keep?” I can guarantee you that they will outlast you, so don’t be too concerned about that!

Bringing Science and Legends Together

Some of the stories that I want to get into about the Frankincense are really beautiful, and I love stories.  We have our scientists over here–and I love science, too–but I have a little conflict personally between stories, theories, legends, and science because I find sometimes science gets in the way of letting the stories and the legends and intuition come through for me, but it is so beautiful when you bring two worlds together, isn’t it? It’s really exciting–and that’s what we are doing here today.

The people who gathered the Frankincense resin had dogs that were trained to sniff out what was called the “carpet viper” or the “red flying snake.”

Frankincense Trees were Well Protected

God had created these snakes and placed them in the Frankincense  trees to protect and guard the trees from anyone destroying them or violating them because they were so special and so sacred.  There’s an old Arabian right there who has just got past the snakes to approach the tree.  I don’t know how many tree huggers we have in this room, but if you’ve not hugged a Frankincense tree you haven’t hugged a tree yet!   I suggest that all of you go to Oman because when you touch this tree (even when you are 30' of  it) you can feel the energy coming off the tree. It makes it difficult to keep your allergies at bay; it makes it difficult to swallow because there are lumps that get in your throat as you approach the tree.

The carpet viper was very deadly and it would drop down your neck–it has a very specific place where it like to go and it liked getting on your neck–and it would bite right on the spinal column, and death would come within 10 seconds, so dogs were trained to sniff out these snakes.  They were also called flying snakes because they had the ability from a laying position to spring 5' in the air, so you can imagine why the legend was told of the flying snakes! If they were up on the limb of a Frankincense tree and they could jump 5' into the air, they could also fly quite a distance towards the ground, so it was very easy to get attached to you!

Different Grades of Frankincense

Now the Frankincense produced different gums at different times of the year.  Frankincense resin that was the most sought after was gathered in the fall and they called it  “Male FrankincenseThe Female Frankincense was primarily produced in the spring and was brownish is color, with smaller crystals or droplets.  The Male Frankincense was very, very white and it had the shape of certain parts on a man, and that’s why it was called male FrankincenseIt was also called “Hogery.”  Today in our modern terms we list five different grades of Frankincense and the number one grade is called Hogery or the Male Frankincense.

If the people who gathered the Frankincense were caught with this Hogery they would lose their hand. If they were caught with it the second time they would lose their second hand. If they were caught with it the third time they lost their life.  You see, there was not a lot of forgiveness for people who stole in those days! Imagine what it would be like today if we still practiced those customs!  We would make a very, very honest society or we wouldn’t have anybody on the planet. This was the resin that was distilled for the kings and the queens. This would have been the resin that was distilled and taken to Mother Mary in Bethlehem.

Early Practices with Frankincense and Myrrh

There was a practice that was very common and was used for many years before the time of Christ, and it was that Frankincense oil was used to anoint the tummy of the expectant queen or princess or royal lady of the house because evil deities would approach and attack and try to enter and posses that future king or queen.  So they knew that by rubbing the Frankincense on the tummy it would keep the evil deity away (that  today  we  have  given  a  name  called disease– cancer, arthritis, or whatever) and so it was used in that regard.

Three to six weeks prior to birth  Myrrh was used on the perineum to prevent infection, to create elasticity, and then when the baby presented, the crown  was anointed with Frankincense.  As the baby was laid on mommy’s tummy Frankincense was anointed over the entire baby’s body.  The umbilical cord was totally covered with Myrrh oil and the perineum again.  Myrrh oil was used for a period after the delivery on the umbilical cord, because at that time (prior to the birth of Christ) and for some time after Christ, this was the custom.  The placenta and the umbilical cord were not cut after birth.  The umbilical cord was left attached to the placenta and so they would cover the umbilical cord and the placenta with Myrrh oil because it would prevent infection and it would also dehydrate them  until they would detach three to six days later.  This custom was called “Lotus birth.”

Why “Lotus Birth?”

Why would they practice this custom? They had a belief that when the baby came through the birth canal the baby had trauma. The baby carried the trauma of the mother during the nine months in the womb, but by leaving the placenta attached to the baby during that three to six-day period, all the trauma, all the emotion would go back out and be reabsorbed into the placenta.  So when the placenta dropped off, the child was totally clean emotionally and had a pure spirit with which to start life, so that practice went on for many, many years.

Other Early Legends

Another practice that was very interesting was the mother would squat over the Frankincense burner for a period of time every day (perhaps 20 or 30 minutes). She would start her incense burner and she would squat over the Frankincense and allow her bottom to be fumigated because it did several things. First, it prevented infection, but second, it reestab-lished muscle tone, so she was able to conceive and have another child the next year. Ladies, think about that.  You may want to practice some of these customs again!

Now, some of the things that they used Frankincense for were really interesting. You’ve seen some of the old research I’ve shown you from the National Geographic that it cures every disease from gout to a broken head.  Why?  It is simply because Frankincense was so powerful in its ability of augmenting the immune system and in its ability of attacking foreign cells in the body.  Did they have a university degree to know this?  Of course not!  They knew it intuitively.  They were blessed with this knowledge.

There was even a story told (in fact it’s in one of my books) that when Adam and Eve were kicked out of Paradise that God gave them Frankincense and  Myrrh and they placed it in the caves because it was to be given to the Christ Child when the Savior was born–and that was passed down through the generations, and after the flood Noah retrieved it from the caves and gave it to his son–and you see, King Od (who was the king of the City of Od) was the grandson of Noah.  It’s a beautiful story and it just gives you something to think about.

Egyptian Practices

Anyway, they would burn the resin and fumigate the rooms every morning. The rituals in the Egyptian temples included incense burners (not of this structure), but more of a very shallow dish on the side of each door in each of the sacred rooms in the temples. There would be initiates (which were young men who were studying to become  priests) and part of their job was going every morning and replenishing the sacred dishes in these temples and lighting them and letting them burn.  So incense was offered twice daily in the tabernacle as well as the Temple in Jerusalem.

These are not things that are uncommon to us, or unknown. In the New Testament incense offerings represented prayers of the saints.  It is said in the legends that the white resin was the tears of God that wept for the sins of the children–and that is kind of touching, too.  Another angel came and stood at the altar, having a gold censor, and there was given unto him much incense that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. (Revelations) and the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints was scented up before God out of the angel’s hand.

Treating Baldness with Frankincense

Frankincense was used to treat cancer in ancient times.  Frankincense was used to treat arthritis, osteo-porosis, vomiting, sickness, and  baldness. In fact, I have a recipe at home for baldness.  I haven’t had time to mix it up and experiment with it yet, but I thought maybe now with the new team of people that I have, I am getting more time to make more formulas, and I am getting really excited about Convention next year.

I have been thinking about this new hair formula and Mark has already found a name for it. He said, “Gary, let’s call it “There Again.” I think that is a pretty good name!  How many of you would like to experiment with the formula for growing hair?  Quite a few of you?  Alright! I shall give it to you.

First ingredient is Frankincense.  And then you have to find a rattlesnake (or a carpet viper) and you burn him alive, then you take the soot from the burnt flesh of the snake and you mix it with the Frankincense.  The third ingredient is camel dung, and you mix the three together and make a poultice on the head.  The objective is to wear it day and night!

We’re not sure if it’s the camel dung or the Frankincense that grows the hair!  Could I see all those hands again?  Please let me know how effective it is..5 or 15 ml bottle?  I would say it would be a little difficult to get some of the ingredients to drip.  You would probably want to use a WheyFit bottle so you could get a good handful to pack up there!

Unusual Applications for Myrrh

Myrrh oil was used for preventing baldness.  It was used to stop hair loss. It would be massaged into the scalp at night before going to bed.  Myrrh oil has other attributes.  If you look in the Aromatherpy Medical Journal it says Myrrh oil is an aphrodisiac. I don’t know who would say that Myrrh oil was an aphrodisiac because if any of you have ever put Myrrh oil on, gone to bed, and expected your sweetheart to cuddle you, well, let me know!

As you know, Myrrh and Vetiver and Valerian have similar traits–they are like dirty socks–not just dirty socks, but dirty socks that have been worn for several weeks, but the oil is beautiful and has a beautiful luster to it that is just great.  And it is great in the scalp.   Mary has used Myrrh oil for years and finally when I talked her out of using Myrrh oil at night Jacob was conceived–so it’s very effective! And now I have her putting it on during the day just as I am leaving to go to the farm and it’s quite okay.  But it is beautiful for the skin.  Myrrh oil is one of the most powerful anti-infectious oils that you can have in your possession.  There are many other beautiful benefits that I won’t have time to go into today.

Treating Arm Tumor

Last January I went to the hospital because my right arm was bothering me so much that I got to where I couldn’t  raise it; I couldn’t move it back–it was just worthless.  It had been hurting off and on for three years and just kept progressively getting worse and worse.  Then when I had the little jousting experience last September it kind of aggravated it, so  I finally went in January and they did a CT scan, and I had a tumor growing in the top of the humerus.  They felt it was a result of the original injury in 1973.  They said, “The only thing we can do is go in and cut it out and do a bone graft.” and I said, “No thanks.”

So I started using two oils–anyone want to guess what they are?  Frankincense and Balsam.  I went back on June 8 and they did a scan.  The tumor was gone and the bone was totally 100% healed and regenerated.  Now, when I had this little accident I have been using a combination of oils, Tansy, Marjoram, and Lemongrass to repair the ligaments (which is extremely effective in regenerating ligaments) and I have been using the Frankincense and Balsam for the bone where they put the plate and the screws in when they did the bone graft.

A few weeks ago I got back into my books that I brought back from Oman and started reading again, because it has been several years, and I was just brought to tears. In one paragraph it said, “Frankincense and Balsam for the healing of fractured bones.  It is so beautiful when you see these things.

DNA Repair with Essential Oils

There are a couple of things that happened here: In 1999 when at Convention.  I talked about essential oils and their ability to repair DNA   It was a theory–I could see it; I knew it; I felt it and I believed it.  Some-times Gary gets bold and says things ahead of time like when I shared in Denver that oils would cure scoliosis and now it is documented in my book.

Increasing Longevity

I knew this then and I was so bold that I not only shared it, but I wrote about Frankincense and Sandalwood and Myrrh having the ability to repair DNA. Not only do they repair it, but they can prevent the break-down of it and they also repair the telomere strands. That is part of the reason why the ancients used these oils so effectively because they intuitively knew these oils not only prevented breakdown, but increased longevity. When you think about it–if you can prevent DNA breakdown, does it not stand to reason that you can increase longevity?  Okay.

Of course.  What is death?  It starts on the cellular level, so if you can stop death on the cellular level by preventing DNA breakdown, what greater value could you have whether it’s external or internal?  That is so beautiful, and this was the illustration of what we were showing here when hormones that are made from cholesterol (protein plasma) come into the target cell, (into the mitochondria), you have receptor sites and they have to go into that receptor site to create the information and the replication that goes from the receptor sight to the DNA strand and then it transmit that information from the telomeres to the MRNA, but then it creates the replication of new cells.

Oils Dissolve Petrochemicals in Blood

Chemicals then actually create a microfilm over the receptor sites and block the receptor sites from receiving those hormones.  We know now that  phenols (particularly found in Oregano, Thyme, Mountain Savory), and also alpha pinenes found in Frankincense, Sandalwood, Myrrh are very effective in eating or dissolving the petrochemicals in the blood.  They clean up the receptor sites that allow for those hormones to come into that receptor site and then we create (instead of a dysfunctional response) we have a duplication, and this is how it should be.

Protein synthesis is right here instead of in an altered condition.  That is what we want to see–so it is very, very important.  And these oils have the ability to not only prevent the breakdown in the DNA and the telomeres, but to repair it.

Grotesque Cancer Treated with Oils

Now let’s go to the pictures.  This was one of my first subjects many years ago when I first started working with cancer in 1985.  This young man had previously had two surgeries.  You can see the scar right here from the second surgery.  When he came in to see me the doctors had given him two weeks to live.  The tumor was growing 1" every 24 hours; it was attached to the carotid artery, the esophagus, the jugular vein and was infiltrating the brain and the right shoulder.     The first picture is when he came in to see me the first time. He went home and came back one week later and this is the condition one week later.  It was growing so fast they said it would just slowly strangle him.

I put David on our treatment program and in two weeks the tumor had slowed down, but it was still growing; it was still alive.  I said, “David, you know and I know that you don’t have much time.  I would like to do an experiment if you are willing..” and he said, “What’s that?”  I said, “I want to inject Frankincense.”     He said, “Has this ever been done?” and I said, “Not that I know of.”  He said, “What will happen?”  I answered..”One of two things–it will either work, or it will kill you.”

He said, “Gary, I’m going to die–that I know. If what research that I can participate in may help others, then go ahead.”  I put Frankincense in a solution so we could inject it without risk of embolism and injected the tumor in multiple locations around the tumor and in the tumor three times a day.

We mixed up an ointment of blood root, zinc oxide, and comfrey and placed over the outside of the tumor because all the little microscopic  blood vessels were just rupturing constantly and  bleeding, and so it helped to cauterize the topical vessel because at this time I didn’t even know that Helichrysum existed.

So we started injecting around the tumor and this was one month later as the tumor was dying and sloughing off and pulling away.  As we talk about DNA repair I hope you can understand what you are going to hear following my presentation.

This picture was 60 days later.  The scar you see here coming around the esophagus is the root that came and was attached to the carotid artery here and came around the esophagus.  You can see all this tissue regenerating and filling in.  This is DNA repair and regeneration in the truest form. That’s why I stand here today before you.

This picture was five months from when we began and there was hardly a mark left showing on his neck–it was totally free of the most deadly cancer that exists.  And he is only one of thousands that we’ve had this experience with.  He was the most extreme case that I had ever had with malignant melanoma and one of the most successful, so this is what gave me the fuel to pursue and go forward and do what I’m doing when everybody was slandering me and telling me I was crazy, that I was just messing with snake oil and I was going to destroy my credibility.

If you got on the internet, you could see I didn’t have any credibility to destroy, so I wasn’t concerned about that.   I would sooner have a young man alive than politically correct and dead!  Thank you.

Moderator - Current Research with Oils

Thank you, Gary. It’s amazing what’s going on with our oils–and we will talk about that in just a moment.  We are going to look at Frankincense today.

Over the course of time Young Living has had a rich tradition of history with research which Gary has talked about, and for many years Gary has been very involved with various universities and projects in researching the effects of our oils.  Currently, we have projects going on with the Post School of Medicine, with Weber State University, and with Brigham Young University.

Just recently we had the opportunity of working with Nicole Stevens and she chose as her Master’s thesis to look at all of Young Living's single oils and four of our blends for their cancer capabilities. Nicole is now working at the University of Nevada Las Vegas Cancer Research Institute and she is pursuing her research on the effects of essential oils and other materials on their cancer inhibiting capabilities, so it is with great pleasure that we have the opportunity now of hearing of Nicole Stevens. Please help me in welcoming her on stage.  Nicole

Nicole Stevens - Glimpse into Research

Thank you so much. It’s an honor and a pleasure to be in such a distinguished company.  This is my first Young Living Convention, and I have to say, “I am impressed with your enthusiasm!  It’s wonderful!

I am now working at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but the research I am going to present to you today was started at Brigham Young University.

Young Living Oils Valued for High Quality

Before I begin I want to tell you that as a scientist I was beginning my research and I wanted to make sure that I was doing the scientifically correct thing.  I knew I wanted to work with plant extracts.  I did some tests; I did some extracts of my own.  I tested a few other brands and I have to tell you that I chose Young Living because of its purity, because of its consistency and because it was just flat out the best thing I had tested, including what I made myself! So we will go ahead and begin.

Natural synergy–we’ve heard that word a couple of times before in some of the other presentations that have been presented so far, so I want you to keep in mind what synergy is. It is several things working together in harmony such that the product is more than the sum of its parts.

About Cancer Today

Let’s talk a little bit about cancer.  It’s a frighten- ing word; it’s a frightening disease.  And its’ frightening because it’s our own body turning against us.  The frightening statistics of what cancer is and what it does and the risk of developing cancer during your lifetime is very high. I live in Las Vegas and if I had odds like that in the casinos, I would be there right now–one in two, one in three–but when you are considering something that could kill you, that is fairly frightening.  Today there is a $143 billion estimated cost of cancer,  (that’s from the American Cancer Society).  That $143 billion includes direct medical costs; it includes loss of  productivity; it includes early mortality.

When your clients are talking about paying “x” amount of dollars for an essential oil, “x” amount of dollars for Berry Young Juice [now called NingXia Red Juice], keep that in mind! I have a friend whose daughter was just diagnosed with childhood leukemia.  The medical costs so far are $2 million!  One child–and she’s not better yet and she’s still fighting, so I think it’s worth a little bit of preventative measures to try and combat some of that cost.

So what is cancer?  We’ve talked a lot about this and Gary just spoke to us about DNA.  In cancer the most important factors are your DNA repair systems.  Mutation is happening all the time.  We have things coming in from the outside–we have radiation, chemicals, and even our own cells make mistakes during their copying.  We’ve talked a lot about the free radicals–they will come in a destroy your DNA.  We all have DNA repair systems and most of the time they work pretty well, but if you are run down, if your immune system gets compromised, you start to make mistakes.  The mistakes will divide into daughter cells and the daughter cells may not recognize it as a mistake anymore and it gets propagated, and this is the beginning of cancer.

Concerns with Cancer Cells

If you don’t catch it in time; if your immune system then doesn’t recognize that as a foreign body, there is your cancer right there.  It is also part of cancer that the cell doesn’t recognize the signal to die.  Normal cells can live for a great amount of time, but then as they recognize they are damaged, they need to know how to die–and that’s part of the problem with cancer. They don’t recognize those signals, that their DNA is damaged and they need to pull the plug.

So in diagnosing cancer there are quite a few problems, one of them being the time between when the cancer begins and when we scientifically detect it.  There is an estimate that it takes about one billion cells to make a tumor that is big enough for us to detect.  A couple of divisions later you have a baseball-sized tumor going on, so again, we are into a matter of prevention. It is much easier to prevent it than it is to cure it, even when we’ve got it.

Thinking about a cancer tumor, once we get that cancer growing the mutations start happening more rapidly because those DNA repair systems are com-promised, so in a tumor you could have a whole bunch of different cells with different mutations.  That’s going to make it difficult to know of one kind of treatment that’s going to work better than another.

Another problem is chemotherapy is going to target all of your rapidly dividing cells, since cancer cells tend to divide rapidly. Well, your bone marrow is dividing rapidly, your hair cells are dividing rapidly, your GI tract cells are dividing rapidly–and they are all going to be toast–and that makes you sick!  Basically, your immune system is becoming more compromised as you are getting these treatments, which is counter productive in a lot of ways.

Looking for Alternative Treatments

We are looking for new ways of treatment or new ways of thinking about treatment that help us get around these things, not only to bolster the immune system to help yourself fight off the cancer, but also things that can be targeted specifically to cancer cells and leave your normal cells alone to help you fight it.     So we turn to plants.  Now it may seem too green thumb, too left-wing–but if you think about it, most of our drugs on the market today came from plants.  As Gary Young and many of the others have said, God gave us certain things to use for our benefit, and I am a believer in that.

God-given Plants Provide Cures

I really believe we have everything here that we need to cure and to prevent these diseases.  Less than 1% of higher plants have been studied exhaustively for their medicinal value.  This includes exotic things, like those being in the Rain Forest of Africa or where ever, but it also includes things like these essential oils, like plant extracts of things we grow in the garden or the things that grow on the side of the road.

You have heard of Taxal–that was developed from a plant.  That’s one of the breast cancer treatments that is currently in use.  Several of the other ones up there are chemicals developed directly from plants.

We talked about Myrrh, we talked about Frankincense mentioned in the Bible still being used.  Tribal and cultural uses are still most of what these plants are used for.  We still have tribes in Africa, we’ve got all sorts of traditional uses for these plants that have typically been poo-pooed by the scientific world as not being scientific.  Well, we are trying to change that.

Experiments with YL Essential Oils and Cancer

That brings us to essential oils, which was the subject I wanted to research, and I chose Young Living specifically because of its purity and because of its consistency.  That was something very important for me.  I tested several lots of these essential oils because I wanted to make sure from lot to lot to lot you were getting a similar kind of mixture of all the chemicals in the essential oils.

As the plants grow, the oils that they produce (the chemicals that they produce) are going to be very dependent on their growing conditions–on the water, on the temperature, on the humidity.  A lot of these chemicals are plant-stress chemicals (and that is not necessarily a bad thing) because they need to be able to have chemicals to protect themselves from invaders.  They need to be able to destroy.   If another plant gets too close, they want to be able to keep it away.  If bugs or fungus or whatever get on the plant they have to have a way of combating that, and they want to be able to stimulate their own cell growth.

So these plants are just power houses of chemicals, but they have to be consistent or else it’s not going to do us any good to have an essential oil that is going to be worlds different from one time to the next.  In some companies I did find that because they weren’t consistent in the way that they grew the plant, that they treated the plant, and that they extracted the oils–so what we have here is a product that is really filled (I think) with love such that it is always the same and it is always high-quality.

I found as I was testing the oils I wanted to use, I knew the thing that I liked was the steam distillation.  It’s not the only way to extract chemicals from plants.  You can use chemicals to extract chemicals from plants, but then you have more chemicals in it that aren’t part of the natural mixture of the chemicals. In my tests I found that type of extraction was interfering, causing me to not be able to recognize what was doing what or what was going on.

Secret of Oils in the Synergy

We’ve talked about a couple of the chemicals that essential oils contain–the terpenoids, the phenols. We’ve got coumarins, we’ve got alcohols–all sorts of things that are incredibly  active and physiologically proven and documented, so I wanted to test to see (number one) if the mixture was as good as the individual parts and (number two) which of these were going to be the most active on cancer cells in vitro.

I was doing a similar thing to what Gary just talked to you about.  Mine is not quite as impressive (I am just working on little individual cells), but I wanted to do it in a way that was controlled and very scientific.  I wanted to just screen all of these oils and see what I could do against these cancer cells.

I found that the secret of these oils is the synergy, the mixture of these compounds that somehow makes it bigger than the individual compounds themselves. I will get to my results in a second, but after I found oils that were active and wonderful and exciting I separated them out to use them with chromatography  and then I tested individual components on the cells.  What do you think I found?  Nothing! They didn’t do anything.  Even the ones that are supposed to be active individually (when you try to separate them out from the plant, from the whole extract) they didn’t have nearly the activity.    Some of them, like the pinenes and some of the terpenoids still had a little bit of activity, but it was so not above the controls that it wasn’t even statistically significant.

Screening the Oils Against Cancer Cells

So I wanted at that time to screen all of the single oils that Young Living was producing and five of the mixtures, and I wanted to take four different cancer cell lines and a non-cancer cell line because it’s really good if we kill all the cancer cells, but I wanted to find something that didn’t kill the normal cells too.  Other-wise, we would be no better than the chemotherapy on the market right now, which just kills everything.

I wanted to find oils that showed 50% or more cancer cell inhibition and 45% or less inhibition of the normal cells.  I wanted to find the ones that basically killed the cancer and left the normal ones alone, and I wanted to see if there were any correlations between which oil killed which cancer cell lines and then look traditionally just to see out of curiosity if any of these had already been intuitively recognized.

Results Shown on Overhead Projector

If you look on the right of the screen you will see a plate like the ones I used in my test.  The pink represents the cells. The way that I dyed them, the more pink there is, the more cells there are–so if you look in the middle, this happened to be Lemon.  There are not very many cancer cells left, interestingly enough.

Over on the left are the controls (I compared every-thing against a control grown in the same way) grown at the same temperature in the same amount of time.  The only difference was adding these essential oils in.  There were several concentrations down to 50 micro-grams.  To give you a little bit of comparison, a paper clip weighs about a gram, a thousandth of that is a milligram and a thousandth of that is a microgram, so we are talking about tiny, tiny amounts here.

Results: 58% of the oils showed general cancer inhibition, which means that they were very inhibitory and killed all the cancer cells, and 34% (which is where I wanted to concentrate my efforts) showed cancer specific inhibition–and seven were active against multiple cancer cell lines (which was the most exciting for me!)

Criteria for Research

I wanted to look at oils that showed synergistic effects–meaning I take them, I separate them out, I try the individual components and see if they were as active as the entire oil.  I wanted to look at significant activity at the lowest concentration I tested, because if you think about it, the lower the concentration you can get that will still kill the cancer cell, the less possibility you have for side effects of things that you don’t want it to be doing, and I wanted to look at multiple cancer activity.

Exciting Results with Essential Oils

So I will highlight a few of these.  At the top we have White Fir and we had an inhibition of the cervical cancer line of 72% and the non-cancer cell line shows healthy growth.  That’s what we are looking for.  We are looking for things that will actually help your normal cells grow while keeping the cancer cells down to help you fight off your own cancer!

Again, we have our citruses in here.  One of them is OrangeWe have Frankincense up here, and we just had a wonderful entire presentation about that. There was 72% inhibition and growth of our non-cancerous cells.  We have Myrtle–multiple against both prostate and breast cancer while only killing 3% of the normal cells. Sandalwood killed everything while only inhibiting about 20% of the normal cells.  That is very exciting!

Down here we have Thyme, we’ve got ValerianThese are all inhibitory and under 10% death of the normal cells–under 10%!  When you think about chemo, we are getting incredible cell kills, sickness, immune system compromise, very hard on your body. So this is exciting for us!

What can we draw out of this?  Essential oils absolutely have the potential as anti-cancer drugs.  Screening processes such as this one are important because it can then direct our research on things such as the Sandalwood, the Frankincense and help us be able to understand what’s going on in order that we can make this a more mainstream treatment.

Future research is being done on some of these promising oils and areas of interest definitely, such as stimulating normal cells, DNA repair, helping cells with damaged DNA get the signal again to die,  immune protection, and preventing metastasis.

Metastasis Can Kill

In the cancer classes that I’ve had metastasis is actually what kills you in many instances.  You have a cancer start somewhere, but then it metastasises and goes to your lungs, it goes to your liver, it goes to your brain–and that’s what’s going to kill you.  We can prevent that, too.  That’s an important tool we have for fighting the cancer and keeping it from killing us.

Future Research to Take Place

Future research that we are working on now and in the future include the following:

Sample acquisition - Young Living has done that and has been doing that for years.

Primary in vitro qualitative assays - that was this experiment that I wanted to do, identifying active extracts.

Bio-active directed isolation - I tried that too and discovered that the active extracts are better than the  actual parts.

Structural elucidation -  meaning that we are going to try and look at the chemicals, see how they are working together.

Secondary assay - we are starting at them in conjunction with each other.

In vivo evaluations - rats, rabbits (animals) to see how they respond to the same kind of treatment.

Pre-clinical development.  There might actually be cancer drugs that we can use from these essential oils, drugs that can be used in the mainstream medical.

Use Caution in Giving Advice

I don’t have medical say-so to go out and tell you to tell all your clients to have this be their primary cancer care treatment.  Personally, if I had cancer, I’d be there, but since I can’t tell you to do that I will tell you that the research is ongoing and very promising and very exciting.

So just thinking about synergy and thinking about these results is very satisfying as a scientist to realize that you’ve now got the numbers and the data to backup a dream and a vision that a man and his company have had for decades.  It’s humbling in a lot of ways to realize that we have multiple scientists here and multiple tests, multiple data figures that are all showing us the same thing.

We Have Promising Information

This is something wonderful, promising, exciting!  You have it in your hands to take to people, means that will help them, that will protect them.  As a scientist, sometimes we like to be skeptical because the numbers talk and sometimes (again) I have a hard time with that because I like to be emotionally driven as well, and as I was reading Gary Young’s books when I was putting my thesis together, I was blown away because he knew about it, he sensed it, he knew before the numbers I had backed them up.

I hope that you recognize that these things, these oils, these products that you have are wonderful. I am continuing my research now at the University of Nevada Las Vegas Cancer Research Institute, and we are going to be looking specifically at of getting cancer cells to die.

We are looking at that programmed cell death and how it can relate to these essential oils because I think that they can short-circuit that cancer cell death signal and make the cells be able to die when they realize their DNA is so damaged.

I hope to be here many years to come, continuing to giving you those numbers that are showing you what you already knew, that these products are wonderful and can help so many people.  Thank you for the opportunity of being here.

Moderator - Thanks to All

Thank you, Nicole.  That was fascinating.  Isn’t it wonderful to see ancient wisdom and modern science come together.  It is absolutely fascinating!  We expect to see a lot more from Nicole and from the research that she and others are doing.  We appreciate the research she has done.  This is university research so it will be published, and when that happens we will let you know on the Young Living website and have a link for you there.

Thank you, Gary and Nicole, and thank you for being with us on Training CD #71.
